Solar Canopies for New Parking Structures

The top deck of a parking structure is a ready-made solar site: elevated, unshaded, and already engineered to carry load. A canopy array over the top deck adds covered parking, integrated lighting, and EV charging while producing power for the structure and the buildings it serves. Designing it with the structure, rather than adding it later, keeps the columns, drainage, and conduit where they belong.

Eventure's Role

Eventure works with developers, architects, and structural engineers to design top-deck solar canopies into new parking structures from the first framing plan.

We bring solar into the project at schematic design, size the Energy Code requirement, coordinate the roof, structure, electrical rooms, and battery location with your architect and engineers, and carry the system through permitting, utility interconnection, inspection, commissioning, and closeout.

Title 24 treatment

Covered parking and carports count toward Solar Access Roof Area under Section 140.10, so a canopy on a parking structure can help satisfy an adjacent building's PV requirement. Standalone garages are generally not listed occupancies, though a structure with habitable space carries solar-ready obligations for that space.

Design Considerations

What is different about parking structures.

  • Structural integrationCanopy columns, foundations, and wind loads belong in the structure's design. Adding them to a completed deck is possible but far more expensive and disruptive.
  • Drainage and lightingCanopies change how the top deck sheds water and how it is lit. Integrated LED lighting and drainage coordinated with the civil engineer keep the deck safe and dry.
  • EV charging infrastructureCALGreen requires EV-capable and EV-ready spaces in new parking. Conduit, panel capacity, and charger locations planned with the canopy serve both requirements.
  • Serving adjacent buildingsThe canopy can interconnect with the garage's own service or with an adjacent building's, which affects how the system counts toward that building's Energy Code requirement.

Keep Solar Off the Critical Path

Don't let solar be the last thing standing between your project and its Certificate of Occupancy.

On parking structures projects, as on every California building, the Energy Code requirement, the fire authority's review of the battery, the utility's interconnection timeline, and the building's final inspection all depend on the solar scope being designed, permitted, installed, and documented in sequence. We treat it as a scheduled trade from day one.

Questions

Parking Structures solar, answered.

Can a parking structure canopy satisfy an office building's Title 24 requirement?

Often, yes. PV may be installed on covered parking or carports on the lot, and those areas count toward Solar Access Roof Area. The interconnection and metering must tie the canopy to the building's service in a way the code and the utility accept.

Is a solar canopy heavy?

The modules and racking are light relative to the structure's design loads, but the canopy columns, wind uplift, and foundations need to be in the structural engineer's calculations from the beginning.
