Solar for New Laboratories and Research Facilities

Laboratory buildings run high ventilation rates, specialized exhaust, and equipment loads that make them among the most energy-intensive commercial buildings. Their roofs are dense with exhaust stacks and air handlers. Solar and storage have to be planned around that equipment and around research loads that cannot tolerate interruption.

Eventure's Role

Eventure works with life science developers, research institutions, and their design teams to integrate solar into laboratory buildings early, when roof and electrical decisions are still open.

We bring solar into the project at schematic design, size the Energy Code requirement, coordinate the roof, structure, electrical rooms, and battery location with your architect and engineers, and carry the system through permitting, utility interconnection, inspection, commissioning, and closeout.

Title 24 treatment

Laboratory buildings are evaluated by occupancy mix. Office and other listed occupancies trigger Section 140.10 when they make up at least 80% of floor area; laboratory spaces may be treated differently. The 2025 Energy Code updated several laboratory-related provisions, and we confirm the applicable requirements with the project's energy consultant.

Design Considerations

What is different about research & laboratories.

  • Exhaust and air handling on the roofLab exhaust stacks, dilution requirements, and large air handlers claim roof area and impose clearances. The array is planned with the mechanical engineer so both fit.
  • Protecting research loadsFreezers, incubators, and instrumentation need stable power. Storage designed with a critical-load panel can carry selected loads through outages.
  • Classification and the 2025 codeThe 2025 Energy Code changed how laboratories are treated in several provisions. The PV and storage analysis depends on the building's occupancy mix, which we confirm with the energy consultant early.
  • Parking structures and carportsResearch campuses often include parking structures and lots that provide uncontested solar area.

Keep Solar Off the Critical Path

Don't let solar be the last thing standing between your project and its Certificate of Occupancy.

On research & laboratories projects, as on every California building, the Energy Code requirement, the fire authority's review of the battery, the utility's interconnection timeline, and the building's final inspection all depend on the solar scope being designed, permitted, installed, and documented in sequence. We treat it as a scheduled trade from day one.

Questions

Research & Laboratories solar, answered.

Is solar required on a new laboratory building?

It depends on the occupancy mix. Buildings with at least 80% of floor area in listed occupancies such as office carry the PV and storage requirements; laboratory-dominated buildings may not. We complete the analysis with the energy consultant during design.

Can a battery protect research freezers?

Yes, if the critical-load panel and controls are designed for it. We identify the loads with the facility team and size the system accordingly.

Send us the drawings at any stage. We will size the Title 24 requirement, review the roof and electrical approach, and map the path to a Certificate of Occupancy that does not wait on solar.
