Solar for New Cold Storage and Refrigerated Warehouses

Cold storage is the most energy-intensive warehouse type and the best match for solar among them: refrigeration runs hardest on the hottest, sunniest afternoons. The roof, however, is shared with condensers, evaporative equipment, and the insulated panel system that keeps the building cold. Planning the array around that equipment is the difference between a clean installation and a compromised one.

Eventure's Role

Eventure designs solar and storage for cold storage developers, operators, and the general contractors and refrigeration contractors who build these facilities.

We bring solar into the project at schematic design, size the Energy Code requirement, coordinate the roof, structure, electrical rooms, and battery location with your architect and engineers, and carry the system through permitting, utility interconnection, inspection, commissioning, and closeout.

Title 24 treatment

Conditioned warehouses, including refrigerated warehouses, are listed occupancies under Section 140.10 and must install PV and battery storage. Refrigerated spaces may be regulated partly as covered processes; we confirm the analysis with the project's energy consultant.

Design Considerations

What is different about cold storage.

  • Refrigeration on the roofCondensers and evaporative coolers need airflow and service clearance. We lay out the array with the refrigeration engineer so neither system compromises the other.
  • Insulated panel roofs and attachmentsAttachments through insulated metal panels and membranes need detailing that preserves the thermal envelope and the roof warranty. Ballasted and manufacturer-approved attachment systems are selected with the roofing contractor.
  • Demand and thermal storageRefrigeration demand peaks with ambient temperature. Battery storage and, in some facilities, pre-cooling strategies reduce demand charges and ride through short outages.
  • Structural capacityTall cold storage buildings with long-span roofs need the array load in the structural calculations from the start.

Keep Solar Off the Critical Path

Don't let solar be the last thing standing between your project and its Certificate of Occupancy.

On cold storage projects, as on every California building, the Energy Code requirement, the fire authority's review of the battery, the utility's interconnection timeline, and the building's final inspection all depend on the solar scope being designed, permitted, installed, and documented in sequence. We treat it as a scheduled trade from day one.

Questions

Cold Storage solar, answered.

Why is cold storage such a strong fit for solar?

Refrigeration load rises with outdoor temperature, which tracks solar production closely. A large roof array offsets a meaningful share of daytime refrigeration, and storage extends that into evening peaks.

Can solar be installed without compromising the cold envelope?

Yes, with the right mounting approach. Attachment details are coordinated with the roofing manufacturer and the insulated panel supplier so the envelope and the warranty stay intact.

Send us the drawings at any stage. We will size the Title 24 requirement, review the roof and electrical approach, and map the path to a Certificate of Occupancy that does not wait on solar.
