Solar for Hospital Campuses and Healthcare Facilities
Hospital campuses are regulated differently from most buildings, permitted through the state's healthcare facility authority rather than local building departments, and designed around emergency power systems that solar supplements rather than replaces. The campus still contains medical office buildings, parking structures, central plants, and support facilities where solar and storage are both required and valuable.
Eventure's Role
Eventure supports health systems, healthcare developers, and general contractors with solar planning across the campus: the acute care building, the support buildings, and the parking fields.
We bring solar into the project at schematic design, size the Energy Code requirement, coordinate the roof, structure, electrical rooms, and battery location with your architect and engineers, and carry the system through permitting, utility interconnection, inspection, commissioning, and closeout.
Title 24 treatment
Medical office buildings and clinics on a healthcare campus are listed occupancies under Section 140.10. Acute care hospital buildings are permitted and classified differently; their solar scope is determined with the healthcare permitting authority and the design team rather than by the standard nonresidential PV provisions.
Design Considerations
What is different about hospitals & healthcare.
- Jurisdiction and reviewAcute care facilities follow state healthcare permitting; medical office buildings and parking structures on the same campus may follow the local building department. Each path has its own timeline and documentation.
- Emergency power coordinationHospital emergency power systems are governed by strict codes. Solar and storage are planned to coexist with them, typically serving normal power and selected loads rather than the essential electrical system.
- Campus parking and carportsHospital parking structures and surface lots are excellent carport sites and support EV charging for staff and visitors.
- Resilience planningBeyond the acute care building, storage can keep clinics, pharmacies, and administrative functions running during outages and public safety power shutoffs.
Keep Solar Off the Critical Path
Don't let solar be the last thing standing between your project and its Certificate of Occupancy.
On hospitals & healthcare projects, as on every California building, the Energy Code requirement, the fire authority's review of the battery, the utility's interconnection timeline, and the building's final inspection all depend on the solar scope being designed, permitted, installed, and documented in sequence. We treat it as a scheduled trade from day one.
Solar and the Certificate of Occupancy
Questions
Hospitals & Healthcare solar, answered.
Is solar required on a new hospital in California?
Hospital buildings are permitted through the state's healthcare facility authority and are classified differently from the listed Table 140.10-A occupancies such as medical office buildings and clinics. The support buildings on a campus often carry the standard requirements. We confirm the classification and the review path for each building.
Can solar connect to a hospital's emergency power system?
Emergency power systems in hospitals are governed by strict codes. Solar and storage are generally designed to serve the normal power system and selected non-essential loads, with any interaction with essential power engineered by the project's electrical engineer of record.
