Solar for New Senior Living Communities

Senior living combines a residential energy profile with institutional expectations for continuity of power. Residents depend on elevators, climate control, medication refrigeration, and communications in ways that make outages a safety issue rather than an inconvenience. Solar paired with storage is both a code requirement on taller buildings and a resilience strategy.

Eventure's Role

Eventure designs solar and storage for senior housing developers and operators, coordinating with the architect, the electrical engineer, and the fire authority so the system supports life-safety planning rather than complicating it.

We bring solar into the project at schematic design, size the Energy Code requirement, coordinate the roof, structure, electrical rooms, and battery location with your architect and engineers, and carry the system through permitting, utility interconnection, inspection, commissioning, and closeout.

Title 24 treatment

Senior housing built as multifamily residential follows Section 170.2: low-rise buildings require PV, and buildings of four or more habitable stories require PV and battery storage. Licensed care facilities with institutional occupancies are evaluated under the applicable nonresidential or exempt classifications, which we confirm with the project's energy consultant.

Design Considerations

What is different about senior housing.

  • Occupancy classification mattersIndependent living is typically a multifamily residential occupancy, while licensed assisted living and memory care may carry institutional classifications with their own fire and life-safety rules. The classification affects which Energy Code sections apply and how battery systems are located and protected.
  • Resilience beyond the code minimumWhere a battery is required, sizing it to carry critical loads through an outage is a modest incremental decision during design and a major retrofit afterward. We model the critical-load panel with the electrical engineer early.
  • Round-the-clock loadsSenior communities run kitchens, laundry, and climate control continuously. The load profile favors storage and makes production forecasting more valuable to the operator's budget.
  • Fire authority coordinationBattery energy storage systems in occupied buildings are reviewed closely by fire officials. Locating the system, its clearances, and its signage during design avoids relocation during construction.

Keep Solar Off the Critical Path

Don't let solar be the last thing standing between your project and its Certificate of Occupancy.

On senior housing projects, as on every California building, the Energy Code requirement, the fire authority's review of the battery, the utility's interconnection timeline, and the building's final inspection all depend on the solar scope being designed, permitted, installed, and documented in sequence. We treat it as a scheduled trade from day one.

Questions

Senior Housing solar, answered.

Can the battery provide backup power for residents?

Yes, if it is designed for it. A compliance-only battery and a resilience battery can be the same equipment, but the critical-load panel, transfer equipment, and controls have to be in the electrical design. We help operators decide which loads matter most and size accordingly.

Do assisted living facilities have to install solar?

It depends on the occupancy classification assigned to the building. Residential classifications carry the multifamily PV requirements; some institutional classifications are treated differently. We confirm the classification with the architect and energy consultant at the start of design.

Send us the drawings at any stage. We will size the Title 24 requirement, review the roof and electrical approach, and map the path to a Certificate of Occupancy that does not wait on solar.
